Bluebell Festival

Roses might be red, but bluebells are lavender-blue, and we’ve got ‘em! Ten acres of gorgeous bell-like blooms, in fact. Each spring, Maple Leaf Park’s forest is transformed by countless dancing bluebells suspended from delicate green stems. A great reason for celebration if ever there was one. Guests visit from all over Illinois and the Midwest—we’ve even had flower enthusiasts from as far away as Oklahoma—to enjoy our festival. Stroll among the bluebells and 18 species of wildflowers, search for rare white bluebells, picnic along the banks of Big Indian Creek, and snap photos for your scrapbook.

Bluebells have been present in Illinois for hundreds of years and bloom annually from March through May. Although they don’t bear a strong scent, they do attract butterflies. A limited number of plants are available for purchase during the festival and may be ordered in advance.

Come for the bluebells and stay for dessert! You won’t want to miss the lush desserts, freshly brewed coffee, and soft drinks served at Waterside during festival weekends. Our selection includes tangy-rich Key Lime Cheesecake, buttercream-frosted Carrot Cake, Marble Cheesecake and Strawberry Cheesecake.
